Fake Bomb Alert in London

2:11 pm, Thursday 10th June 2010

Police in riot gear were sent to raid a central London gallery after it put a fake bomb in the window.

Alison Southward, manager of Mauger Modern Art, in Rochester Row, Westminster, said she arrived at work to find officers in riot gear outside.

A police spokesman said it had received reports of a "suspicious" device.

The gallery said the "comedy bomb" was strapped to a step ladder and featured "Western-style bunches of dynamite" and an alarm.

Ms Southward said: "I arrived to open up the gallery, and a riot van and two squad carriers were outside.

'Sent to prison'

"The officers told me they were just about to break the door down.

"They told me having something that looks like a bomb is a criminal offence and I could be sent to prison."

Industrial Fire blaze in Exeter

9:21 am, Sunday 6th June 2010

The company at the centre of a huge blaze at a city industrial unit has revealed the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

As reported in the Echo, hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as 85 firefighters fought the fire at the Colas depot in Tan Lane.

Nearby flats quickly became affected by the smoke and a decision was taken to evacuate residents and nearby firms.

They were allowed to return when the fire was brought under control two hours later.

Paramedics were called, but no one was injured.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away and a host of dramatic images from the blaze were caught on camera by Echo readers.

A Colas spokesman said: "The depot will be back up and running on Monday, although it is likely to take until the end of the week for the telephone system to be back to normal.

"It is a relatively small depot with three staff and the office and warehouse were unaffected. The fire was in the workshop and was caused by an electrical fault."

The city's emergency services have won praise from the public for the way they dealt with Thursday's blaze at Colas.

Pam Rice, co-ordinator of Turntable, the charity which provides good quality second hand furniture for people on benefits, is based in Exton Road.

Pam and the rest of her staff, who are mainly volunteers, were evacuated at the height of the blaze and had also been told to move their vans from the yard as a precaution.

Hilton Comes to Exeter!

9:19 am, Sunday 6th June 2010

LUXURY hotel chain Hilton is planning to create a multimillion pound new site in Exeter.

The Echo can reveal that a site near the city centre has been identified by the world- famous company as a potential location for a major new hotel development.

Talks have already taken place with the owner of lawnmower specialists Radmore & Tucker, who has indicated he is willing to sell the firm's prominent site in Frog Street, at the bottom of Western Way, if he can secure alternative premises.

John Tucker said he was contacted by an agent acting for Hilton several months ago.

Negotiations have progressed well, though a deal to sell the site — understood to be worth in the region of £2million — has yet to be concluded.

"They were keen to get it all done, but last I heard there were certain searches that hadn't been completed yet," said Mr Tucker.

"I'm hopeful that it will be concluded fairly soon."

Mr Tucker, whose parents started the business more than 50 years ago, is making plans to move to a new, purpose-built lawnmower and garden machinery showroom and repair centre at Peamore, near Alphington.

"Our customer base isn't really in the city anymore — it's all in the outskirts and with the traffic it's becoming more of a pain to get around," he said.

"We need access to the A30 and A38, because 70 per cent of our business is up the M5 or down in Cornwall.

"Hopefully within a year to 18 months we will be moving to a new purpose-built unit."

He added he believed knocking down his existing premises, near Exe Bridges, and building a new hotel on the site would "smarten up the area".

A Hilton Worldwide spokeswoman said: "Hilton Worldwide is in an exciting phase of growth and we are looking at many locations around the UK to introduce various brands from our Hilton portfolio.

"Exeter is a destination which has attracted our interest and we are in discussions regarding a site in the town, though nothing has been confirmed at this early stage."

Blackpool FC hits the big time!

7:55 am, Wednesday 26th May 2010

Blackpool Football Club's elevation to the Premier League is worth "tens of millions" of pounds to the resort, officials believe.

Some of football's biggest names will visit the town next season after the Seasiders' 3-2 victory over Cardiff.

It will be the Seasiders' first season in the top flight since 1971 and is said to be worth £90m to the club.

But the benefits to the resort itself are "unthinkable", said Helen France, Blackpool Council's tourism chief.

Despite having one of the lowest average attendances in the Championship, Blackpool took more than 35,000 fans to Wembley for the play-off final.

Tourism and regeneration chiefs are already planning how to capitalise on the promotion and new found profile that Premier League football will bring.

Ian Holloway describes the effect of promotion on the resort

Mrs France, the council's executive director of tourism, said: "We're so excited about this - it's unthinkable the benefits this could bring to Blackpool.

Heathrow Cancels Expansion

7:52 am, Wednesday 26th May 2010

Plans for a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport have been scrapped by the new government.

Councils, residents and green groups had opposed the expansion scheme which Gordon Brown said was needed for economic reasons.

John Stewart, from Hacan ClearSkies, which campaigned against the runway said he was "absolutely delighted".

Airport operator BAA said it would work with the new government to provide strong trading connections.

The new government said it would also refuse any additional runways at Gatwick and Stansted airports.

Cage Fights in Guildford

12:46 pm, Wednesday 12th May 2010

GUILDFORD’S Mandolay Hotel has applied for a licence to host combat sports including cage fighting.

Managers of the London Road venue also want to stage boxing, wrestling, karate, kickboxing and other martial arts.

If approved by Guildford Borough Council, the Mandolay would become the only place in the borough with permission to stage such fighting events.

A spokesman for the hotel said joint manager Stephen Hay decided to submit the application after attending a charity boxing night in Woking.

“We were talking to the organisers and we were really impressed and that’s the sort of thing we are looking to put on every so often,” he said.

“It’s obviously still at the application stage so we don’t want to make any presumptions.”

The HG Wells conference centre in Woking has a licence that allows it to host such events.
